THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE – ACTION FOR STROKE

The Sports Excellence Center (SE) of the 1st Orthopaedic Surgery Clinic, Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA), “ATTIKON” University General Hospital, announces the launch of the “Therapeutic Exercise – Action for Stroke” program, addressed to patients who have experienced a stroke.

EXERCISE AS AN ALLY IN REHABILITATION

Therapeutic exercise is defined as the individualized planning of physical activities, appropriately adapted to the patient’s medical condition, leading to non-pharmaceutical therapeutic benefits and reduction of disease symptoms.
It is now well established that exercise contributes significantly to managing the effects of a stroke. Beyond the direct effects, evidence also suggests that exercise is strongly linked to secondary prevention.

INDICATIVE FUNCTIONING OF THE THERAPEUTIC EXERCISE CENTER

The exercise programs implemented at the Sports Excellence Center | Sports Excellence (SE) are based on the guidelines of the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) and the Central Health Council (KESY) of the Greek Ministry of Health.

The procedure followed for Therapeutic Exercise includes the following stages:

  • Evaluation by a Physician, Physiotherapist, Exercise Scientist, and Psychologist
  • Monitoring of biochemical indicators at the beginning, during, and at the end of the program
  • Anthropometric assessment and body composition analysis
  • Assessment of physical fitness level
  • Program implementation – duration: 12 weeks (3 sessions per week)
  • Creation of an electronic medical record
  • Additional monitoring through digital questionnaires
  • Recording of perceived exertion and performance after each session
  • Re-evaluation after 6 weeks (end of the first mid-cycle)
  • Continuous feedback
  • Upon completion of the 12-week program, participants receive three-month follow-up exercise plans to promote continued physical activity
  • Re-evaluations take place 6 and 9 months after program completion

Guided and personalized exercise contributes significantly across multiple stages of post-stroke rehabilitation. Encouraging patients to adopt a more active lifestyle requires:

  • Information
  • Motivation
  • Continuous feedback
  • Ongoing supervision
  • Easy access to appropriately tailored programs

PRIORITIZING PATIENT SAFETY

All exercise sessions are accompanied by continuous monitoring of participants’ vital signs, ensuring adherence to the recommended exercise framework.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES FOR PARTICIPANTS

Participants are expected to enhance their physical and psychological condition, improve functionality, and increase mobility and autonomy in daily activities.

The exercise program design is based on the latest scientific evidence.
Integrating exercise into daily life enhances quality of life.

The strengths of the program include direct accessibility and the implementation of personalized therapeutic exercise methods.
